OUR STORY…so far

The Freescape Music Project began with a simple conversation in early 2020. Sitting in a local Head Teacher’s office, chatting over a cup of tea about the state of music in primary schools—or rather, the lack of it—it became clear just how many children were missing out.

As we talked, a Year 6 girl appeared at the window. The Head Teacher, with a tear in his eye, said, “This child has such a beautiful voice, but the sad thing is no one will ever hear it. She’s unlikely to ever have the opportunity to fully realise her musical potential.”

In that moment, it hit me. She was just one of thousands of children in our local area who, because of their background, home situation, or financial hardship, would never get the chance to access music lessons or creative activities. Learning an instrument is too often seen as a luxury—something only families with disposable income can afford. The number of children missing out is growing, and unless we do something, it will only continue.

Music is more than just a skill; it’s a powerful tool for emotional well-being. It helps young people express themselves, process emotions, and build confidence. Studies show it can significantly reduce anxiety and depression, yet so many children are denied access to it.

The barriers to music-making need to be broken down. Now is the time to take action.

That’s why we founded Freescape Music Project—to address this imbalance, to create opportunities where none exist, and to provide a safe, supportive space for children and young people to discover the transformative power of music. Because we believe music can change lives—and that every child deserves the chance to experience its magic.
